French Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society

Description

LHS has both French and Spanish Honor Societies. The purpose is to recognize students who have demonstrated a commitment to learning the French and/or Spanish language and culture both within and beyond the classroom.

Juniors and seniors who have qualified academically (having earned a B- in French III or B- in Spanish IV) are sent an invitation to apply for membership each January. Students must prepare and submit an application. All world language teachers at LHS complete an evaluation (“faculty evaluation”) of the student as a dedicated language learner. At the end of February, a committee of world language teachers meets to select members. The committee uses the results of the faculty evaluations and the information submitted by the student as the basis for making its decision. Students are selected for membership based on the extent to which they have demonstrated a commitment to learning the language and culture both within and beyond the classroom.

Gaining admission to the LHS French or Spanish Honor Societies is a challenge and an accomplishment in which students can take pride. Unlike an award, though, it is not an end. Members are expected to continue learning the language and culture throughout their high school careers. In addition, students must commit to tutoring other language students for at least two hours a month until they graduate.

Any questions should be directed to the advisor, Kurt Jannke, in room 211 or at kjannke@ledyard.net.
